Bodies of 18 Immigrants Found in Truck in Texas

VICTORIA, Texas (Reuters) - The bodies of 18 illegal Mexican immigrants who died from suffocation and heat exhaustion were discovered on Wednesday in a packed tractor trailer abandoned at a rest stop.

Someone from inside the sweltering truck used a cell phone to call an emergency 911 operator around midnight, frantically pleading that the immigrants were trapped and suffocating. But the call was lost and the truck rode on until Victoria.

It was two hours later when sheriff's deputies responding to a disturbance at the truck stop discovered the dead among a group of immigrants packed into the trailer, many of whom ran off when the doors were opened early on Wednesday morning.

Authorities said they could account for at least 62 immigrants, dead or alive. Michael Shelby, U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Texas, said as many as 100 could have been inside the truck. It appeared to have been driven roughly four hours to Victoria, from somewhere near the Mexican border.

The phone call came around midnight as the truck drove through Kingsville, more than 100 miles south of Victoria, Kingsville police chief Sam Granato said. The Spanish-speaking caller told the English-speaking operator "We're asphyxiating. We're illegals," Granato said, but police could not trace the phone's location.

Ten minutes later a caller reported to Kingsville police having seen someone frantically waving a bandana through a hole in the side of a trailer. The 18 victims, including a child, more than doubled the number of illegal immigrants believed to have died in U.S.-Mexico border crossings this year.

Federal authorities in Houston, where the truck's cab was found, arrested a man to whom the vehicle was registered in Schenectady, New York. Shelby identified the man as Tyrone Williams, and said he had not yet been charged with a crime. Charges were expected later, he said. Police were still hunting two other suspects, a man and a woman, he told reporters
at a press conference.

Fifteen immigrants, ranging in age from 14 to 91, were taken to two local hospitals for treatment. One of the 18 fatalities, a 91-year-old man, died from a heart attack soon after arriving at Citizens Medical Center, a hospital spokeswoman said. Several of the immigrants were released by the hospitals to the custody of the sheriff. Some were in good condition and three were in serious or critical condition. Detar Hospital spokesman Jerrel Robinowich said some of those brought in had body temperatures of 105 degrees Fahrenheit.

Thoughts on traveling (either way) across the border...

Something happened a while ago that gave me pause to consider the issue of planning for the unexpected. I was sitting on my side porch shortly after nightfall enjoying the glow of a disappearing sunset, when a couple of people walked by. I said howdy, and they asked me if I was an American. They told me their car had broken down shortly after heading north from Rosarito and they then headed north on foot towards Tijuana with the intention of returning home to the San Diego area. They had to travel a long way to reach my house, and were tired and edgey. They had attempted to call for help at a roadside callbox which didn't work. They asked me if I would help them. After lending them my cellphone to call family, they were told that no one would come to pick them up. To make a long story short, I took them to Tijuana and put them in a cab. I told the driver to take them to the border crossing.

The reason I am posting this anecdote is to encourage travelers in the border area to plan for the unexpected. The existence of a fence (the border) creates situations that can be awkward or dangerous at times. Perhaps the best suggestion I can offer to those who traverse the border is maintain contact with someone who is willing to help you, should the occasion require.

Algo sucedió hace un rato que ése me dio pausa para considerar la aplicación planear para el inesperado. Me sentaba en mi pórtico lateral poco después anochecer que gozaba del resplandor de una puesta del sol que desaparecía, cuando caminó un par de la gente cerca. "Howdy" dicho, y ella me preguntó si era un norteamericano. Ella me dijo que su coche hubiera analizado poco después el norte del título de Rosarito y ella entonces dirigió al norte a pie hacia Tijuana con la intención de volver a casa al área de San Diego. Ella tuvo que viajar una manera larga de alcanzar mi casa, y era cansada y procupada. Habían procurado llamar para la ayuda en un teléfono del borde de la carretera que no funcionó. Me preguntaron si podría ayudarles. Después de prestarlos mi celular a la familia de la llamada, les dijeron que nadie vendrían tomarlos . Para hacer un cortocircuito largo de la historia, los llevé a Tijuana y los puse en un taxi. Dije a conductor llevarlos el paso de frontera.

La razón que estoy fijando este anecdote es animar a viajeros en la zona fronteriza que planeen para el inesperado.
